I'm Zoë Moss and this is my art blog. I am a Calarts graduate and I do all kinds of art. I am currently character designing on Bojack Horseman at Shadow Machine.
I always wanted an art blog! I decided to make a dedicated one.
Not creepy! But I hope you guys can reconnect!
I haven’t, I’ve always gone by zoemoss!
However, I know I’ve seen work by a “thenakedcupcake”!
Hello! I double checked my professional portfolio since I wasn’t sure I had fanart in there - my official professional portfolio can be found here: http://brainfarto.com/portfolio/ . I think you may have been looking at my website which does have a fanart section.
I think that when in doubt, don’t add fan art. I think that when job recruiters are looking through a portfolio, they want to see what you can create as a character designer, not what you can recreate from someone else’s designs. A while ago, I asked Stephen Silver about this, and he said , “Be careful, think, would they put this in a pixar Art of book?”.
One thing I think you could do are designs based on fairytales, folktales, myths, etc. It’s not fanart, but it would be designs that you’re creating based on a pre-existing idea.
All that said, fanart is not bad, nor is it a bad way to get noticed. In fact, it’s a very, very GOOD way to get noticed. It’s perfectly okay to put it on your website, tumblr, etc.. But when it comes to professional portfolios, I think that people want to see YOUR creative designs, not someone else’s.
Hope this helps!
